As the college football coaching carousel spins, the discussion of representation takes a new twist

The 2025 college football coaching carousel is poised for significant changes, potentially affecting racial diversity among head coaches. Industry estimates suggest up to 40 coaching positions could become available, influenced by large buyouts and ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policy rollbacks. Currently, four of the 11 open head coaching positions were previously held by Black men. Interim Black coaches now lead teams at Penn State, UCLA, and LSU.

Despite a growing number of minority players and assistant coaches, head coaching roles remain predominantly filled by white men, with only 14 out of 136 FBS head coaching positions held by Black men as of recent data. The Trump administration's DEI policy changes, affecting over 50 universities, have led to some university leaders resigning or not being confirmed due to their support of DEI initiatives.
