Vikings legend Jim Marshall dies at 87
Our Summary
Vikings legend Jim Marshall passed away at the age of 87. Initially drafted by the Browns in 1960, Marshall was traded to the Vikings in 1961, where he played until just before his 42nd birthday in 1979. Notably, he set a record for starting 270 consecutive games with one team, second only to Brett Favre's 297. Marshall was a key member of the Vikings' "Purple People Eaters" defensive line and participated in four Super Bowls. His jersey number, 70, was retired by the team, and he was honored in their Ring of Honor.
Marshall is famously remembered for a 1964 play where he mistakenly ran 66 yards in the wrong direction after recovering a fumble, resulting in a safety. Despite this, his earlier forced fumble contributed to a win against the 49ers. Though considered by the Seniors Committee in 2023, he has not been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Condolences are extended to his loved ones.
