Why firing Steve Wilks was the right move for the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks after one year. Despite a strong Super Bowl performance, there were clear signs of disconnect between Wilks and the team. The defense regressed in 2023 and struggled on third downs. There were also issues between Wilks and head coach Kyle Shanahan, including a public call-out and disagreements on coaching preferences. While there was progress in certain areas, the overall disconnect led to the decision to let Wilks go. Shanahan will now look for a new defensive coordinator for the 2024 season.
