What does moving on from Stefon Diggs look like for Buffalo Bills’ salary cap?

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been the subject of speculation regarding his future with the team. Diggs' contract has significant financial implications for the Bills. While his 2022 and 2023 salaries and bonus are guaranteed, his 2024 money is currently unguaranteed. The Bills have until March 18 to decide what to do with Diggs, as his $18.5 million salary for 2024 will fully guarantee after that date. If the Bills trade or release Diggs, his bonuses, known as dead-cap hits, would accelerate onto the 2024 cap. Restructuring Diggs' contract this offseason would limit the team's flexibility in future seasons. The Bills are projected to be over $50 million over the 2024 salary cap and cannot afford to add a $31 million dead-cap hit. However, releasing or trading Diggs would only add $3.2 million in cap commitments to their 2024 cap number. They could also designate Diggs as a post-June 1 release, which would provide cap relief but limit their options in signing impact players. Head coach Sean McDermott's comments about Diggs have fueled speculation about his future with the team. The author suggests that the Bills should keep Diggs for 2024 while drafting a new receiver to eventually replace him in 2025. If the Bills decide to move on from Diggs, releasing him with a post-June 1 designation would be the best accounting option.
