Candice Tavares, a wood artist, shares her journey and inspiration behind her work. She initially started with digital illustrations to counter the negative portrayal of Black people in the media. Tavares then experimented with cutting her illustrations into wood and found that it resonated with her. She uses different wood species to capture the natural beauty of Black and brown people, adding depth and dimension to her pieces. Tavares uses a laser cutter and hand cutting techniques to create her art. For her, art is therapeutic and she wants her work to affirm and uplift Black people while also encouraging others to appreciate the beauty in her pieces. The eyes in her artwork invite an emotional connection and a different perspective.
