2023 position breakdown: Special teams

Since Dave Fipp became the special teams coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2021, their special teams unit has consistently been one of the best in the NFL. They have been successful on 8 out of 10 fake punt attempts, with punter Jack Fox and linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin both completing passes. Fox is ranked fifth in punting average and sixth in net punting average in the NFL. The Lions have several free agents, including kicker Michael Badgley and linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who are key contributors on special teams. The Lions value special teams and will prioritize re-signing players like Reeves-Maybin. In the draft, the Lions may look to add kickers or a kick returner to bolster their special teams unit.
