The Detroit Lions defense struggled in 2023, particularly with deep passes and defending quarterback runs. However, they excelled at stopping opposing running backs. In fact, the Lions allowed the fewest rushing yards to running backs in the entire NFL that season, with only 1,028 yards in 17 games. They also finished third in yards per carry allowed to running backs, behind only the Texans and Patriots. The Lions faced significantly fewer rushing attempts by running backs compared to other teams, with 296 attempts against them. This improvement in run defense is a major contrast to their performance in 2022, where they ranked 12th in rushing yards allowed to running backs and 23rd in yards per carry allowed.
