The Detroit Lions had a strong season from their linebackers in 2023. Alex Anzalone led the team with 129 tackles, becoming the fourth player in franchise history to have multiple seasons with at least 125 tackles. Rookie Jack Campbell had an impressive rookie season, recording 95 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks. Derrick Barnes also had a solid season with 81 tackles and a key interception. The Lions' linebackers played a big role in the team's strong run defense, allowing the second-fewest runs of 10-plus yards and 20-plus yards in the NFL. Anzalone, Campbell, Barnes, and Malcolm Rodriguez are all under contract for next season. Despite the improvements, the Lions' defense still has room to grow, particularly in limiting points and improving red zone performance. Anzalone is seen as the team's MVP, while Barnes is recognized as the most improved player. Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Anthony Pittman are free agents, but both are valuable on special teams and may be re-signed. The Lions may still look to add competition and depth at linebacker in the draft. Anzalone expressed optimism about the team's future and the desire to make history in the upcoming season.
