The Green Bay Packers need to add depth and competition to their guard position this offseason. Currently, they only have Elgton Jenkins, Sean Rhyan, and Royce Newman as guards on the roster. It's possible that Newman may be released to save cap space. Adding to the guard position is a must, not only for training camp and the 53-man roster, but also to maintain the competition that helped improve the offensive line last season. Rhyan is the favorite to start at right guard, but he will have to earn the position. While he excels as a run-blocker, he needs to improve his consistency and pass protection. The Packers have options in the upcoming draft to bolster their guard depth and provide competition for Rhyan. They also have the flexibility to explore free agency if the right impact player is available. PFF's top 150 free agents list includes 11 guards, with contract projections for some of them.
