Former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien had the chance to return to the team for the 2024 season but declined. The Patriots' offense struggled with inconsistency at the quarterback position, as well as issues with the offensive line and wide receiver depth. O'Brien, a Boston native, chose to become the head coach at Boston College instead. He believed it was important for Jerod Mayo, the new defensive coordinator, to hire his own staff. The Patriots have hired Alex Van Pelt as their new offensive coordinator and are allowing him and other assistants to make their mark on the offense.
