The Las Vegas Raiders are planning to bring in a new quarterback this offseason. However, second-year quarterback Aidan OConnell will also have a chance to compete for the starting job. The team is looking to upgrade from OConnell, and it is unlikely that they will bring in a quarterback of the same skill level to compete with him. While the word "compete" is often used in coach-speak, indicating that everyone on the roster will have a chance to compete, the Raiders ideally want OConnell to be the backup. Finding a quarterback is a difficult task, and last year the Raiders settled for Jimmy Garoppolo. The team has three options to acquire a quarterback this offseason: the draft, a trade, or free agency. The outcome will determine whether OConnell truly has a chance to compete for the starting job. If the Raiders invest in a high draft pick, a significant trade, or a big-money contract for the new quarterback, that player will likely be the favorite to start. The success in acquiring a starting-quality quarterback will ultimately determine OConnell's opportunity to compete.
