The College Football Playoff Board has approved a new 5-7 format for the upcoming 12-team playoff starting in the 2024-25 season. Originally planned as a 6-6 format, the change was made due to conference realignment and the decline of the Pac-12. Under the new format, the five highest-ranked conference champions and seven at-large teams determined by the CFP Selection Committee will make up the playoff field. This will be the first time an extended playoff is introduced in college football, with the first round games played on campus. The change aims to give more teams a chance and create potential for more chaotic and exciting seasons.
