49ers dump their defensive coordinator

The San Francisco 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks following their Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The decision comes after the 49ers gave up 19 points in their final four defensive possessions. Throughout the season, there were signs of issues behind the scenes, including a porous run defense and a disconnect between the pass rush and coverage. Despite a strong overall defensive performance, the run defense and 3rd down defense were areas of concern. Wilks had previously been fired as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. He also served as interim head coach of the Carolina Panthers but was not retained.
