‘College football broke me’: Trent Dilfer reflects back on time at UAB

Trent Dilfer has returned to Lipscomb Academy in Tennessee as head coach after being dismissed from his role at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in October. Dilfer, a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback, previously led Lipscomb Academy to two state titles. During his tenure at UAB, Dilfer compiled a 9-21 record, including a 2-4 start last season. His efforts were hindered by the transfer portal, which saw key players leave for programs like Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Alabama. Dilfer cited challenges in retaining talent due to limited Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) resources compared to American Athletic Conference rivals. Alex Mortensen, who served as interim head coach after Dilfer's departure, will continue as UAB's head coach. Mortensen has highlighted the university's commitment to enhancing resources and competitiveness in the football program.
