Klint Kubiak is now free to become the Raiders' next coach

Kubiak's previous experience with Geno Smith in Seattle is notable, as Smith was a significant factor in his decision to join the Seahawks. However, contract negotiations led to Smith's trade to the Raiders after the Seahawks opted to sign Sam Darnold instead. The Raiders now face a decision between starting Smith, who holds a fully guaranteed $26.5 million salary for 2026, or using their first overall draft pick on quarterback Fernando Mendoza. A possible strategy could involve Smith starting while Mendoza develops under his guidance.
