Mac Jones: I've proven I can be a starter, but it's a business

Mac Jones expressed interest in following a career path similar to Sam Darnold's to reestablish himself as a starting NFL quarterback. Darnold resurrected his career by spending a year as a backup with the San Francisco 49ers before leading the Minnesota Vikings to 14 wins in the 2024 season. He is now with the Seattle Seahawks and will be playing in the Super Bowl. Jones, who served as the No. 2 quarterback for the 49ers this season, started eight games in place of the injured Brock Purdy, amassing 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions with nearly a 70% completion rate.

Jones believes his performance demonstrated his ability to be a starting quarterback and acknowledged the influence of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan in elevating his game. Currently under contract through the 2026 season, Jones's future with the team remains uncertain, although Shanahan previously stated he would be surprised if Jones did not return.
