Sources: Rutgers closing in on defensive coordinator hire

Travis Johansen, currently the head coach at the University of South Dakota, is a leading candidate for the defensive coordinator position at Rutgers University, according to sources. Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano aims to finalize the new hire by Monday. Johansen, recognized for his defensive acumen, was promoted to head coach at South Dakota after the 2024 season, leading the team to a 10-5 record and a spot in the FCS Playoffs quarterfinals. Previously, Johansen served as the defensive coordinator at South Dakota starting in 2019, where his defenses consistently ranked in the FCS top-25 in several categories. His coaching career has also seen 16 of his players advance to the NFL through drafts, camp invites, or as undrafted free agents. Prior to his tenure at South Dakota, Johansen coached at Grand View University, achieving significant success, including an NAIA national title in 2013.
