The Sherrone Moore scandal and race: 'It's going to get worse'

Black coaches in college football face significant challenges in receiving second chances after being dismissed, unlike many of their white counterparts. The number of Black head coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) has decreased from 17 in 2011 to 14 in 2026. In the SEC and Big Ten, only one Black head coach remains following recent firings, including Sherrone Moore at Michigan, who was involved in a scandal.

Experts note that Black coaches are often judged collectively, whereas white coaches are assessed individually. Historical data shows that only eight Black coaches in FBS history have received second chances as head coaches, compared to 17 current white FBS head coaches on their second or third chances after previous dismissals.

The lack of diversity among those hiring head coaches, predominantly white athletic directors, contributes to this disparity. With the current political climate impacting diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, experts fear the situation may worsen.
