USD football promotes Matt Vitzthum to head coach following Johansen’s exit

The University of South Dakota has promoted Matt Vitzthum to head football coach following the departure of Travis Johansen. Johansen left after one season as head coach to become the defensive coordinator at Rutgers University. USD Athletic Director Jon Schemmel emphasized Vitzthum's familiarity with the program and his track record of success in the decision to promote him internally.

Vitzthum joined the USD staff in 2024 as the wide receivers coach and served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He played a significant role in the development of quarterback Aidan Bouman, who achieved over 2,000 passing yards and 26 touchdown passes in 2025. Vitzthum's previous coaching experience includes a decade at Grand Valley State University, where he was offensive coordinator, and stints at Wittenberg University and St. Cloud State University.
