Why is Georgia-Georgia Tech game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium? What to know

For the first time in over two decades, both Georgia and Georgia Tech enter their annual rivalry game, "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate," ranked in the top 25. This year, the game will take place at a neutral site, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, instead of Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium. This marks the first time since 1913 that the Yellow Jackets will not host the game on their campus.

The 2025 matchup is part of the Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic, a college football showcase game. Georgia Tech, which considers this a home game, agreed to the venue change as part of a deal with AMB Sports and Entertainment, securing a $10 million guarantee and an annual game at the NFL stadium through 2026. Former Georgia Tech athletic director J Batt acknowledged fan concerns about moving the game off-campus but emphasized the strategic decision.
