2023 Cincinnati Bengals Season Awards: Most Improved Player

Photo by Mark Goldman/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images There were a number of Bengals players who took strides in 2023—especially with so many new faces getting snaps. Cast your vote and sound off on your 2023 Bengals Most Improved Player! “Most improved” can mean a number of things to different people. Is it an ascension from role player to starter? Starter to Pro Bowler? Or is someone getting their first chance to shine and taking advantage of the opportunity? Well, there is a little bit of everything with the 2023 Cincinnati Bengals and this award. Check out the nominees, cast your vote, and sound off on your winner! Jake Browning, Quarterback: The aspect of a player not getting playing time from the year prior skews the lens of this award, but the team’s backup quarterback has to be in the running here. Browning had 15 total touchdowns (12 passing, three rushing), nearly 2,000 passing yards, and another 127 on the ground. A 98.4 passer rating and a 70.4 completion percentage after not taking a regular-season snap in the NFL make it all pretty impressive. Tanner Hudson, Tight End: Speaking of a guy with little or no experience, Hudson fits that bill, too. Before getting a higher-profile role a few weeks into the season, Hudson had 15 career catches for 199 yards. After grabbing a tight end floating between a No. 1 and No. 2, Hudson notched 39 receptions for 352 yards and a score for the Bengals this year. He should have a role on this team next year as a rotational pass-catcher in third down and red zone situations. Jonah Williams, Offensive Tackle: There are elements of Williams’ play that won’t readily point to huge improvement, but the eyeball test showed that there was a steadiness at right tackle we haven’t seen since the early portion of Riley Reiff’s brief career with the Bengals. After a tumultuous offseason because of the Orlando Brown, Jr. signing and subsequent position change, Williams has made the offseason discussion at right tackle interesting for the Bengals, as they continue to seek a long-term solution. Cordell Volson, Offensive Guard: While there were still some sophomore bumps in the road, Volson did show marked improvement—particularly in the later parts of the season. He raised his rookie overall Pro Football Focus score by nearly seven full points and cut down his penalties from five to three. Cam Taylor-Britt, Cornerback: We saw some flashes of the potential late in 2022 with their second-round pick, but people were wondering how “CTB” would respond to being a full-time starter. Well, when Taylor-Britt was healthy this year, he played at a Pro Bowl level. Taylor-Britt had 11 passes defended, 50 total tackles, and four interceptions in 2023, shutting down some quality receivers in the process. He also was recently tabbed as the team’s most improved player by PFF.

Bengals snubbed in crazy list that defies logic

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports How are the Bengals not counted among the NFL’s Super Bowl-hopeful teams? The 2023 NFL season is over, and any level-headed Cincinnati Bengals fan will fully admit it wasn’t the season they wanted. Franchise quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a calf strain that kept him immobile and the offense struggled. By the time he looked back to 100%, the unthinkable happened. Burrow tore a ligament in the wrist of his throwing hand, and despite the best effort of backup quarterback Jake Browning, the season was sunk. Now there is nothing to do but look forward to the 2024 season and all the fun the offseason will bring. It’s also time for pointless conjecture. NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks wrote of the eight teams with the widest Super Bowl windows heading into the 2024 season, and he had the gall to leave the Bengals out. The list starts innocently enough. The Kansas City Chiefs are in the top spot, and they should be. They’re coming off back-to-back Super Bowl championships, and Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the league. Makes sense. Hey, the Detroit Lions are next. That’s fun! They won a playoff game this season for the first time in over 30 years (sounds familiar), and they’re a fun team to root for. I don’t think they have a better chance than the Bengals, but I’m happy they’re on the list! The Lions are one of the few teams in the league I don’t actively hate. The Baltimore Ravens have the third spot. Okay. I get it. Lamar Jackson won MVP for the second time, but he’s also won two playoff games in his career. If there’s one thing we know about the Ravens and Jackson, it’s that their brand of football doesn’t work in late January and February. This is where the wheels start to come off. I don’t think the Ravens have a better shot than the Bengals. Hey look, the Dallas Cowboys are next! If there was a poster child for a team that used to be dominant but couldn’t find a playoff win with two hands and a flashlight, it would be the Cowboys (the Cowboys now are who the Patriots are becoming). As far as their window being open, I guess I could say that’s true. However, the Cowboys' window isn’t big enough for them to fit through. They have one of those old-fashioned bathroom windows that only a baby could fit through. The Bengals have a better chance than Dallas. Next are the San Francisco 49ers. I have no problem with them being on this list. They went to the Super Bowl this season, and they were in the NFC Championship game the season before. They firmly belong here, and I find it questionable that they’re No. 5. And now the wheels are completely falling off. The Cleveland Browns are next. Yes, you’re still alive and breathing, and as far as I can tell, we haven’t somehow entered into a new reality. According to Brooks, the Browns have a better chance in 2024 than the Bengals. This, of course, is the same team that handed a bajillion dollars to Deshaun Watson, who hadn’t played a game in a year. What did he do in 2023? Well, he looked worse than Joe Flacco, who was plucked out of the retirement home to come play when Watson got injured. The Green Bay Packers are next. This is a pick that I don’t have a ton of issues with. Should they be ahead of the Bengals? No. Should they be on the list? Probably, yeah. Jordan Love looks like he may be the real deal. The Bengals are in a better position, but Packers fans have something to be excited about. And then we come down to the New York Jets. If Aaron Rodgers is healthy and comes back and looks like himself, sure. The Jets are going to be a tough team to beat. They have a good, young defense and a couple of studs on offense. Again, are they in better shape than the Bengals? No. But I understand why they’re on the list. Now I’ve outlined the problem, so here’s my solution. Below are the eight teams with the biggest Super Bowl windows in 2024: Kansas City Chiefs San Francisco 49ers Cincinnati Bengals Detroit Lions Baltimore Ravens Buffalo Bills Green Bay Packers Philadelphia Eagles What do you think?

2023 Cincinnati Bengals Season Awards: Rookie of the Year

Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images An argument can be made for most of the Bengals’ rookie class for this award. Cast your vote and sound off on your winner for the Bengals’ 2023 Rookie of the Year! In some past years, we’ve scrambled to put together a Rookie of the Year award list for the Bengals. Be it Marvin Lewis’ preference to start veterans over younger players, or some weaker classes (or weak first year), the pickings were sometimes slim. That’s not really the case this year, as a number of Cincinnati Bengals rookies made plays this year. Here are the nominees for the Bengals’ 2023 Rookie of the Year—cast your vote and sound off on your winner! Myles Murphy, Defensive Lineman After a slow start, Murphy found his stride later in the season. Two of his three sacks came in the final seven games, and he leapfrogged Joseph Ossai and others for productive snaps down the stretch. DJ Turner, Cornerback If Murphy became a factor late in the season, Turner looked like a shutdown guy in the first half of the year. Into October, Turner was one of the best-looking rookies in the entire class but ended up having some struggles towards the end of the year. Still, the future with him and Cam Taylor-Britt manning the starting cornerback spots brings long-term optimism. Lowest passer rating allowed in coverage among rookies: DJ Turner II: 42.4 pic.twitter.com/Gx3sPqAMBC— PFF College (@PFF_College) October 18, 2023 Jordan Battle, Safety Battle stepped in and began to solidify the back end of the defense later in the year. He was a Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team choice, given his logged interception, two sacks, and 71 total tackles. Charlie Jones, Wide Receiver Some Bengals trivia to wow your friends: Jones scored the first Bengals touchdown of the 2023 season. It came on a beautiful punt return versus the Ravens, where Jones did most of his rookie work. He also contributed on offense sparingly with 7 scrimmage yards and four first downs on nine touches. Chase Brown, Running Back A midseason injury hurt Brown’s overall productivity, but when the Bengals leaned into their running backs more when Jake Browning took over, Brown had some sizzling moments. He finished with 335 scrimmage yards and an electrifying score off of a screen pass, rushing for 4.1 yards per carry on the year. Andrei Iosivas, Wide Receiver The receptions and yards weren’t gaudy, but Iosivas proved to be a solid red zone weapon as a rookie. He had four touchdown grabs on 15 catches and looks to have a bigger role next year.

Intriguing Free Agent Possibilities for the Bengals: Part 1

Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images The Bengals have ample space to make some splashes this spring. Who might be on their radar? The Cincinnati Bengals are poised to have another active free agency period. Though they have some high-profile in-house players upon which to decide, they have wiggle room to sign outside impact players once again. Currently sitting at No. 8 in projected 2024 salary cap space at just north of $61 Million (per Spotrac), the Bengals could make some significant moves. Of course, decisions on Tee Higgins, DJ Reader, and others loom, but they could continue to go for those mid-tier or higher players on the open market. Here is a very early look at a few possibilities. Of course, tags have not been placed, nor has the “legal tampering period”, so things could change pretty quickly. Here are some names in which the Bengals may be interested. Pass-Catchers How many of last year’s tight ends will the Bengals look to re-sign? Which ones do they keep? These are questions that will direct their focus on free agent options. Meanwhile, the ongoing saga with Tee Higgins is something to monitor. If both he and Tyler Boyd leave, Cincinnati will both be leaning on two 2023 rookies and may be scrambling for a veteran option. Additionally, Joe Mixon had major questions about his future last year, but after a contract restructure, Mixon churned out his usual, solid statistical season. What will the Bengals do at these two spots? Dalton Schultz, Tight End After a productive five-year stretch with the Cowboys, Schultz signed a one-year rental deal with the upstart Texans. And, unlike some veteran free agent acquisitions, Schultz continued his solid stat line with C.J. Stroud in Houston. He’s made himself some money again this spring and it will be interesting to see if the market is different for him than that of last year. Cincinnati currently doesn’t have a single tight end under contract, and they’re undoubtedly looking for “the guy” in this position group this year. Hunter Henry, Tight End The veteran tight end has been a touchdown machine in his eight-year career. He’s had 38 touchdown receptions in total, including six last year. Speaking of last year, rumor has it the Bengals inquired about acquiring Henry from the Patriots before the trade deadline, but nothing came of it. On one hand, Henry is creeping close to 30 years old, which has been a no-no in outside free agency under Zac Taylor. However, that’s around the same age Hayden Hurst was when the Bengals took a successful flyer on him in 2022. Noah Fant, Tight End This has been a popular name in Bengals’ circles of late. Fant has been a hard player to get a grasp on since he entered the league in 2019. After being a first round pick, Fant notched 14 touchdowns through his first four years in the league. He weathered the storm that was a trade between the Broncos (who drafted him) and the Seahawks for Russell Wilson. However, he failed to get into the end zone this past year. He’s a well-rounded tight end who can catch, block, and has a first-round pedigree—even if the numbers haven’t lined up there. These types of players have long been favorites in free agency for Cincinnati. Gerald Everett, Tight End The veteran tight end has ties with Zac Taylor, who was on Sean McVay’s offensive staff with the Rams when he was on their roster. He’s since made two other stops with the Seahawks and Chargers, respectively, and keeps putting up decent numbers. He’s notched 284 receptions and 19 touchdowns in seven seasons and has been pretty durable, averaging just one missed game per year in his NFL career. Michael Pittman, Jr., Wide Receiver This one may make a lot of sense, and it could be a big head-scratcher in others. Really, this is a remedy for an unexpected departure for Higgins. Pittman has a lot of similar skills—tall, rangy, big catch radius, and isn’t afraid of the physical catches. However, if the Bengals won’t pay Higgins, would they pay Pittman, who will likely look for a similar type of deal? Austin Ekeler, Running Back Yeah, this is probably weird on the surface, right? After scoring 38 total touchdowns in 2021-2022 and amassing nearly 3,200 scrimmage yards in that span, rumors began spinning about Cincinnati being connected to Ekeler, in one way or another, last spring. Now, entering free agency, Ekeler has lost a bit of leverage with teams. His yards per carry fell off by a full yard (from 4.5 in 2022 to 3.5 in 2023), and he had only a third of the total touchdowns year-over-year (18 in 2022, six in 2023). Still, the Chargers were a mess last year, and with Ekeler nearing 29 years old, he may find renewed life as a versatile, ancillary weapon with Joe Burrow. And, he may do so on a much friendlier deal than what it would have taken the Bengals to get him in a trade last spring. Shoring up the Trenches A couple of longtime Bengals have questions following them once again this offseason. In terms of the offensive line, Jonah Williams had a nice year at right tackle after a big transition, with his health being the biggest feather in his cap heading into free agency. Meanwhile, on defense, the Bengals have big questions on their interior defensive line. Aside from trying to re-create what Larry Ogunjobi gave them in 2021, nose tackle is a major concern going forward. D.J. Reader is both a free agent and a guy rehabbing a major, late-season injury, while Josh Tupou is also an impending free agent. Justin Madubuike, Defensive Line This guy has been a blooming star for the past four years. In almost every major statistical category, Madubuike has shown solid improvement year over year. It culminated in a second-team All-Pro designation this year, with 13 sacks and a whopping 33 quarterback hits this year. Baltimore led the NFL with 60 quarterback sacks this year, with the pressure on opposing quarterbacks being a big key to their success. It may seem like a pipe dream for Cincinnati to snag Madubuike, but what was your outlook with Orlando Brown, Jr. last year? Sheldon Rankins, Defensive Line Going into 2021, Cincinnati made a big push for Rankins, before he darted off to the Jets. And, when Rankins was coming out in the draft, the Bengals were reportedly intrigued in his skill set back then, as well. Now entering his ninth season, there are questions about his ability to contribute, but he was a Godsend for the Texans this year. He put up six sacks and 10 quarterback hits (the second-most in each category in his eight-year career), with three of those sacks and four of those hits coming against Burrow and the Bengals in the middle of this season. DaQuan Jones, Defensive Line Rankins and Madubuike are good three-tech options, but Jones brings a bit more versatility along the line. While playing in a lot of 3-4 packages, Jones has played in all spots along NFL lines. At 320 pounds and showing the occasional pass-rush prowess, Jones could be a nice movable piece for the Bengals in the rough-and-tumble AFC North. Cincinnati needs to shore up the physicality of its defense, and even with his age being suboptimal (32 years old), he could be a helpful player for 2024. Oh, and oddly enough, Pro Football Focus compared his free agent profile to that of Mike Daniels when the Bengals signed him back in 2020. Michael Onwenu, Offensive Tackle Onwenu is a Bengals option only if they move on from Williams at right tackle. Onwenu had an overall PFF score of 71.5 last year with four penalties called against him, Others: Jermaine Eluemenor, Offensive Tackle; Christian Wilkins, Defensive Tackle; Teair Tart, Defensive Tackle; Grover Stewart, Defensive Tackle If you’re unable to join us live here at Cincy Jungle or YouTube for every episode, all of our podcast content is available here on CJ, the Stitcher, Spotify, iHeart Radio and Google Play Music apps, our Orange and Black Insider YouTube channel, as well as through Megaphone and, as always, on iTunes! Joe Mixon Responds to Rumors About Cincinnati Bengals Potentially Cutting HimMixon is due a $3 million roster bonus on March 17 and has an $8.85 million cap hit for 2024. The Bengals would clear $5.8 million in cap space if they parted ways with the former Pro Bowler. AJ McCarron asked Bengals to cut him so he could play in UFLThe Bengals announced they released their backup quarterback on Thursday, with multiple reports saying the 33-year-old requested the move and plans to sign with the UFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks. Cincinnati Bengals Free Agency: Who Are the Best Fits at Running Back? But the expectation is that Mixon will not be back for a chance at an eighth. And even if Mixon accepts a pay cut similar to the one he took ahead of 2023 to stick around, he could struggle to lead the team as his carries would be greatly reduced with the emergence of Chase Brown. Multi-million dollar renovation project now underway at Paycor StadiumThe total cost of the project will come out to around $67 million, with some money coming from the National Football League, the Bengals, the state of Ohio and private investment, in addition to the $39 million from taxpayers.

NFL Mock Draft Roundup: Bengals continue to target offensive weapons

Photo by Michael Hickey/Getty Images The Bengals have numerous holes that can be filled in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Cincinnati Bengals unfortunately missed the playoffs in 2023, but with the season over, it is time to turn our attention to the 2024 NFL Draft and the league’s upcoming free agency window, both of which the Bengals should be active in. Cincinnati has several moves to make in free agency with Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd both potentially hitting the open market. It will also have a top-20 pick to use as well, potentially adding another offensive weapon. That said, with the season over, NFL Mock Draft projections will start to multiply in number. Let’s take a look at who some recently published ones have Cincinnati taking. NFL.com - OT JC Latham - Alabama Cincinnati would be fortunate to see Latham waiting on a phone call in the middle of the first round. Assuming Jonah Williams is not re-signed, the rookie would join Orlando Brownto give the Bengals a massive starting tackle duo. Bleacher Report (excerpt only) - OT JC Latham - Alabama Burrow must stay healthy. It’s been a battle so far, and the inconsistency up front hasn’t helped matters. A big investment in Alabama’s JC Latham could thus be a wise decision. Sporting News - WR Keon Coleman - Florida State The Bengals might be OK letting Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd go in free agency, maybe following former offensive coordinator Brian Callahan to Tennessee. That’s because they will be in the wheelhouse to land Coleman. Coleman is a strong technical receiver after the catch with some big-play and red-zone pop, a la Higgins. The 33rd Team - OT JC Latham - Alabama Latham is the draft’s most pro-ready right tackle and would provide the Bengals with a plug-and-play starter, instantly improving their pass protection and run blocking. USA Today - DT Byron Murphy II - Texas DJ Reader is recovering from a torn quad and might find a richer deal elsewhere in free agency. Plugging in Murphy would set Cincinnati up to generate more havoc up front with a quick-twitch threat who can throw blockers off balance. SB Nation - OT JC Latham - Alabama PFF - TE Brock Bowers - Georgia CBS Sports - OT Taliese Fuaga - Oregon State Everything the Bengals do should revolve around keeping Joe Burrow upright and on the field. Taliese Fuaga is a big, mean man who is a dominant run blocker at right tackle but also a strong enough pass-blocker for the position. He needs more consistency with his feet, as he is prone to oversetting in pass pro, leaving himself vulnerable to the inside.

Bengals 2023 Position Review: Running Backs

Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK Run it back. Even Joe Burrow needs a run game, and having a running back who can make plays in the passing game doesn’t hurt, either. How did the Cincinnati Bengals running backs fair this season, and what is in store for 2024? Key Players Joe Mixon Chase Brown 2023 Review Mixon was a bit of a polarizing figure this offseason, even within the fan base. There were a few incidents involving him off the field, none of which really led to much of anything. There were complaints that he had lost a step on the field, but the biggest complaint was about his contact. Say what you will about the guy, but he has always been a team-first player for the Bengals and agreed to take a pay cut before the season. Then he went out and ran for over 1,000 yards for the fourth time in his career. He also moved himself to third among the team’s all-time rushing leaders and second in all-time rushing touchdowns. The Bengals added Chase Brown in the draft, but just as he was about to start getting more playing time, an injury struck. Brown came back later in the season and showed off his playmaking ability both as a rusher and in the passing game. The run game showed some promise this year, but never really took off the way it could have if they committed to it. 2024 Outlook Although the critics are already chirping, it remains to be seen if the Bengals will part ways with Mixon a year after he took a pay cut to help the team. That is not Mike Brown’s style, but a lot has changed in recent years. If Mixon returns, he will likely pass James Brooks on the all-time rushing board in Week 1 (He’s only 35 yards behind). If he’s back, I don’t see a significant reduction in carries for Mixon (at least not immediately), but I expect to see a much heftier dose of Chase Brown in 2024. They could add someone else to the mix, particularly someone who excels in pass protection, but for now, Mixon and Brown are the two primary ball carriers in the Bengals backfield.

Bengals among teams expected to take ‘major leap’ in 2024

Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK If Joe Burrow is healthy, that’s almost a given. Despite starting quarterback Joe Burrow playing through a calf strain before going down with a season-ending wrist injury that forced backup Jake Browning into action for the final seven games of the year, the 2023 Cincinnati Bengals posted a 9-8 record. With Burrow expected back and healthy next season and much of its roster still under contract, it’s no surprise CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr believes the Bengals are among five teams set to take a “major leap” next season. “Sure the Bengals were a disappointment in 2023, but they also dealt with Joe Burrow injuries across the board, beginning with the star quarterback’s calf injury in training camp that affected his early-season performance to the wrist injury in November that ended his season. The Bengals finished last in the AFC North, yet finished over .500 with Jake Browning starting seven games,” Kerr wrote. “Cincinnati has to decide whether it wishes to retain Tee Higgins and get younger and deeper on the defensive line. Adding help in the secondary wouldn’t hurt either, but having $59.4 million in available salary cap space is massive. “There will be a roster revamp in Cincinnati, yet this franchise wins when Burrow is on the field. When Burrow plays more than 10 games, the Bengals have reached (at least) the AFC Championship. They’ll have a last-place schedule in 2024 after finishing in the basement of the loaded AFC North. Cincinnati could be in store for another deep playoff run. The Bengals had reached back-to-back AFC Championship games with a healthy Burrow in 2021 and 2022, reaching Super Bowl LVI. Thus, there’s no reason the team can’t get back to the top of the AFC again with its franchise quarterback fully healthy. The other four teams joining the Bengals on Kerr’s list were the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers, and Los Angeles Rams. For more from Kerr, click here.

There may not be a luckier offensive lineman in the NFL who has moved between three different teams than Cincinnati Bengals left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. Going into his seventh NFL season in 2024, Brown has blocked for Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens), Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs), and now Joe Burrow. As you can imagine, Brown has an insight into three of the best quarterbacks currently in the NFL that few other players have. So when TMZ asked him who he trusted the most with the game on the line, it meant quite a bit. His response isn’t a shocking one though. “Bro, that’s tough man,” Brown told TMZ. “I’m gonna go with my current QB. I’m taking Joe Shiesty... I feel like Joe Shiesty gonna get it done.” A vast majority of players in this situation will give the nod to their current teammates as the alternative makes way more headlines and could cause some animosity in the locker room. It is well-documented that Burrow and Mahomes are both great options with the game on the line, so it isn’t something to read too far into. That being said, hopefully next season Brown will get to block for a healthy Burrow most of the year instead of just a couple of games. The team did well to win nine games with a clearly hindered Burrow and then Jake Browning. This is just a drastically different team when Burrow is healthy enough to escape the pocket and extend the play. Maybe next season Brown’s faith will be paid off with blocking for Burrow on his own game-winning drive in the Super Bowl. Impending free agent Chris Jones says he’s not leaving Kansas City Chiefs

Photo by Ryan Kang/Getty Images “I ain’t going nowhere, baby.” We’re now just a month away from the start of NFL free agency, where the Cincinnati Bengals will hopefully address some of their biggest offseason needs. Depending on what happens with impending free agent DJ Reader, the Bengals’ biggest need could be at defensive tackle. Arguably the best player at any position set to hit free agency is Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Chris Jones. Poaching him away from the Chiefs could be just what the Bengals needed this offseason, but it doesn’t appear that pipe dream will become a reality. During the Chiefs’ latest Super Bowl parade, Jones said he’s not going anywhere. Soon-to-be FA Chris Jones at the #Chiefs Super Bowl parade: “For those that want Chris Jones gone, I ain't going nowhere, baby! I will be here next year and the year after!"pic.twitter.com/oND8M8kAVs— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) February 14, 2024 Between the fact that Jones is one of the best defensive tackles of his generation and that he’s helped the Chiefs win three Super Bowls, it was already hard to see there not being some type of deal worked out this offseason, even if he did hold out for the team’s Week 1 loss to Detroit this past season after failing to get a long-term contract extension. If the Bengals wanted to show they’re all-in for next season, signing a player the caliber of Jones away from the defending champs would have likely been the best way to do so. But for now, it appears re-signing with the Chiefs is the likeliest outcome for Jones.

Bengals select familiar face in CBS Sports 2023 NFL Re-Draft

Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union / USA TODAY NETWORK What do you think about taking Jordan Battle in the first round? The 2023-24 season is over, and it’s time to look forward to things like free agency, the NFL Draft, and all the chaos of summer training camps and the preseason that leads toward NFL commissioner Roger Goodell handing the Lombardi Trophy to Zac Brown after the Cincinnati Bengals defeat the Detroit Lions in Super Bowl LIX. That’s a run-on sentence, but a good one. It’s also fun to look back, though. The 2023 season sucked for Bengals fans, but there were some good things that came out of it, including the Bengals rookie draft picks, all of whom contributed in some meaningful way. CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso took a look back and re-drafted 2023’s first round, seeing how things could have changed after seeing a full season of play. For the Bengals, he took a very familiar face, the team’s third-round pick, safety Jordan Battle. “Once inserted into the starting lineup,” he wrote, “Battle was a steady back-end playmaker for Lou Amarumo’s bunch.” The Nick Scott signing didn’t work in the Bengals' favor, especially with a very inexperienced Dax Hill by his side. While Hill flashed at times, Scott was often caught with his pants down, which gave opportunities to Battle. And when given his opportunities, Battle shined. He had the second-highest overall defensive grade from PFF, an impressive 82.5. That was higher than Trey Hendrickson, who had an incredible, award-worthy season, DJ Reader, and all other defensive stars. On top of that, since the only player to have a higher score was DJ Ivey, who only played 21 overall snaps, it’s safe to say he had the highest overall grade. He not only shined in the box, but he had the second-highest coverage grade behind Mike Hilton (again, Ivey had a higher score, but only played a few snaps). The Bengals had hoped the combination of Hill at free safety and Battle at strong safety would recreate what they had in Bates and Vonn Bell. That may be a duo that can never be topped, but Battle did show he has potential as a coverage safety. There is still work to do for the Bengals at the safety position, but they can safely mark Battle down for one starting spot next season. What would you think about passing on Myles Murphy to lock in Battle with the No. 28 overall pick?

Update on Tee Higgins and Bengals’ potential use of the franchise tag

Photo by David Eulitt/Getty Images Will Higgins be on the Bengals roster when the 2024 NFL season kicks off? Ever since the Cincinnati Bengals’ season ended, there’s been a growing belief that impending free agent Tee Higgins gets hit with the franchise tag. Paul Dehner of The Athletic is adding to that belief. Dehner reports that the expectation is that the Bengals will ultimately apply the franchise tag on Higgins before he can hit unrestricted free agency in March. “The writing is on the wall and all expectations are the Bengals will use a franchise tag on Higgins,” Dehner wrote. Dehner later wrote that it’s possible the Bengals apply the tag early in the window to help build trade interest around the league. The franchise tag dates run from February 20th to March 5th. “One league source suggested the Bengals could place the tag early in the window as a statement acknowledging no long-term deal will be reached and opening the door for the rest of the league to consider or submit tag-and-trade offers,” Dehner wrote. It’s far from the most ideal scenario for both sides, as they were hoping to get a deal done ahead of the 2023 season. That never came, and there was even a report that the Bengals didn’t view Higgins as a part of the team’s future, though it felt like something Higgins’ agent was pushing and did not come from Higgins himself. Still, it feels like Higgins leaving Cincinnati is inevitable — largely because of Ja’Marr Chase being set to become one of the highest-paid wide receivers — though not until the 2025 season after playing under the tag in 2024. And as Dehner noted above, there’s a chance the Bengals deal Higgins away at some point, but I doubt that happens unless someone is willing to give up a first-round pick and maybe more to get Higgins. Be sure to read Dehner’s full report at The Athletic.

PFF tabs two offensive tackles as fits for the Bengals

Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images They should be in the market. The Super Bowl is over, and now all NFL fans will be looking to free agency, as Cincinnati Bengals fans have been for a few weeks now. With players on the market, players potentially leaving Cincinnati, and those that may stay, the intrigue of the NFL never seems to fade. With the Bengals likely looking to add a new right tackle to the roster with the assumed departure of Jonah Williams, free agency could be where they decide to address it. In a recent article, Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger named two offensive tackles that could be a good fit for the Bengals. First up was New England Patriots tackle Trent Brown. “The Bengals made a splash last offseason in recruiting Orlando Brown Jr. away from the Kansas City Chiefs, but they now have a potential void at right tackle with Jonah Williams set to hit free agency and likely looking to start back at left tackle elsewhere after briefly requesting a trade last offseason,” said. “Brown has played at both tackle spots during his career and, in this scenario, would slide back over to the right side but could fill in at left tackle if needed.” Brown allowed just three sacks last season and finished one of his best seasons with an overall PFF grade of 80.2. The Bengals could value his versatility, as they have had to shuffle tackles around in recent years. The other fit Spielberger sees is Jermaine Eluemunor, who you have probably seen on your timeline discussing Joe Burrow recently. “This could be a great lower-cost addition to solidify the pass blocking on the right side for Cincinnati,” Spielberger said of Eluemunor. “A lot of big in-house contracts are on the horizon, likely limiting how much the Bengals want to spend on outside additions. Cincinnati has done well to add mid-tier veterans along the offensive line in free agency, and center Ted Karras crossed paths with Eluemunor in New England.” Eluemunor has been publicly praising and defending Burrow, lobbied for Willie Anderson to get a Hall of Fame nod, and has been on record saying he wants to play for a team that can beat the Kansas City Chiefs to win it matters. That and a potentially lower cap hit could make for a good match. Let’s say you’re Duke Tobin. Which tackle do you sign? Let us know below in the comments!

PFF projects Bengals to land Brock Bowers in first post-Super Bowl mock draft

Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK This would certainly help the Bengals get back to the Super Bowl. In its first mock draft since the conclusion of Sunday night’s Super Bowl, Pro Football Focus has the Cincinnati Bengals landing one of College Football’s biggest stars. The mock has the Bengals selecting Georgia Bulldogs tight end Brock Bowers as its 18th overall selection. “Bowers’ stock is all over the place,” PFF wrote. “Some have him going No. 5 to the Chargers, while others have him dropping to the end of the top 20. “Still, the Georgia product is one of the best receiving tight ends we’ve seen come through, but I wonder whether the league will be more cautious on first-round tight ends, given how Kyle Pitts has not been given the kind of volume that justifies top-10 value.” Bowers helped Georgia win two national championships and post a combined 42-2 record during his three college seasons. He twice won the Mackey Award awarded to College Football’s best tight end, earned First-Team All-SEC honors all three years of his college career, was a Unanimous All-American this past season, a First-team All-American in 2022, Second-Team All-American in 2021 and was named the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2021. The tight end position has been a revolving door for the Bengals in recent years, making Bowers the perfect fit if he were to fall to the Bengals at No. 18.

Bengals adding Oregon’s Jordan Salkin to staff; Fredi Knighten gets a promotion

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports Both coaches have extensive experience working with quarterbacks. The Cincinnati Bengals have made another addition to Zac Taylor’s coaching staff for the 2024 season. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Oregon Ducks assistant Jordan Salkin is joining the Bengals staff as an offensive assistant. Salkin was an offensive analyst for the Ducks. Sources: Oregon offensive analyst Jordan Salkin has accepted a job with the Cincinnati Bengals. He worked with quarterbacks at Oregon and will be an offensive assistant in Cincinnati. He’s worked with the Dolphins and as an analyst at Texas.— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) February 12, 2024 Salkin has been in the coaching ranks since 2014, first serving as the assistant wide receivers/special teams coach at James Madison from 2014-16. He became the assistant quarterbacks/running backs coach at Rutgers in 2016, then was the assistant quarterbacks coach with the Texas Longhorns from 2017-20. Salkin would become the quarterbacks coach at New Mexico in 2020, then became an offensive quality control coach with the Miami Dolphins from 2021-22 before joining Oregon in April of 2023. The Bengals also appear to have promoted Fredi Knighten to assistant quarterbacks coach, as that’s the position he now holds on the team’s official website. He’d be taking the position previously held by Brad Kragthorpe, who is now the team’s quarterbacks coach. Knighten’s bio now reads the following: “Fredi Knighten will be in his third season on the Bengals’ coaching staff in 2024, and his first in the role of assistant quarterbacks coach. He spent the past two seasons (2022-23) as an offensive assistant.” Knighten joined the Bengals’ staff after spending the 2021 season as an offensive analyst at Utah State. He spent the previous two years (2019-20) at Massachusetts, where he served as the running backs coach and added the role of quarterbacks coach in 2020. Prior to his time at UMass, Knighten spent one season as a graduate assistant at Florida State, where he mainly worked with the Seminoles’ quarterbacks. Both coaches have backgrounds in working with quarterbacks, so that will hopefully help Joe Burrow continue to be one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks.

Jordan Battle named Bengals’ “Secret Superstar”

Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty Images The third-rounder made an impact. When the Cincinnati Bengals were forced to replace Vonn Bell and Jessie Bates III last offseason, they knew they had Dax Hill in waiting, but after not seeing the field much his rookie year, he was largely an unknown. The other safety spot was an even bigger question mark. In March, the Bengals signed Nick Scott, hoping he would play the Bell role. They also invested a third-round pick into Jordan Battle out of The University of Alabama. Scott began the year as the starter, and after an up-and-down first half of the season, Battle started the final seven games. In his time on the field, Battle showed that he was up to the challenge. Battle played so well that Pro Football Focus’ Thomas Valentine named Battle the Bengals Secret Superstar for 2023. “Battle was part of the efforts to paper over the cracks in the Bengals safety as the team lost Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell in the offseason”, Valentine wrote. The third-round pick only started seven games for the Bengals, but his impact was felt in every game. Battle’s 82.5 PFF grade was the second-highest among rookie safeties and the 10th-highest in the NFL, and his 81.3 PFF run-defense grade also ranked 10th.” “Despite being a rookie, Battle became a starter down the stretch, earning a 90.0 PFF grade in the season-finale against the Browns. He’ll continue to shine through as a pivotal player in the secondary.” Hill’s performance this past season still leaves some questions unanswered, but it appears the strong safety spot is in good hands for years to come.

It’s time to get off the fence and root for the 49ers

Super Bowl LVIII | Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports The Bengals and Joe Burrow beat San Francisco convincingly earlier this season. Super Bowl LVIII (58) is here, and some of us Cincinnati Bengals fans are still struggling with who we should root for this evening. Others are going to be happy with the food and libations and really don’t care. But for those who do care, I have a couple of facts that might help you make up your mind. First off, there is only one former Bengal on a Super Bowl roster this year, and that is quarterback Brandon Allen, who is currently listed as a third-stringer behind Brock Purdy and former New York Jet/Carolina Panther Sam Darnold. Although Allen was primarily a backup during his three-year tenure in Cincinnati, he did have to step into a starter’s role after Joe Burrow went down with a season-ending injury in the fall of 2020. While Allen mostly struggled, they did put up a 371-yard, two-touchdown performance in a 37-31 victory over the Houston Texans. Allen also started the 2021 season finale against the Cleveland Browns, where he passed for 136 yards and a touchdown in a 21-16 loss. Or, you might choose to stay loyal to the AFC. The Bengals won the AFC Championship game in 2021 en route to their third Super Bowl appearance. Cincinnati made it to the AFC Championship game again in 2022 before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in the last five years and have a pair of Lombardi Trophies to show for it. My take on the whole thing is that maybe we should throw our support behind the San Francisco 49ers. That’s really hard to say, considering the fact that it was the 49ers who denied Cincinnati Super Bowl glory on the Bengals’ first two trips to the Super Bowl. But I look at it this way. Kansas City beat the Bengals this year by a 25-17 count in a game that cost Cincinnati a trip to the playoffs. So there’s that. Most importantly, though, the Bengals, with a healthy Joe Burrow at the helm, crushed the 49ers, 31-17, earlier this season. So, if San Francisco wins Super Bowl LVIII, Cincinnati can brag that it beat the Super Bowl champs on their home field. And they may have done so again, if only it had the chance. If only Burrow had stayed healthy. If only the Bengals had a top-10 offensive line.

Bengals 2023 Position Review: Tight Ends

Photo by Ryan Kang/Getty Images This did not work out as planned. Kicking the need for a tight end a year down the line finally caught up with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2023, as their one-year-prove-it-deal veteran proved nothing except that they made a bad decision to sign him. Key Players Irv Smith Jr. Tanner Hudson Drew Sample 2023 Review For the second year in a row, the Bengals declined to draft a tight end in what was widely viewed as a very deep class. Veteran Irv Smith was supposed to make himself a lot of money just like Hayden Hurst did in his one year in the Queen City, but that did not work out as planned. Instead, journeyman practice squader and preseason all-star Tanner Hudson emerged as a solid player at the tight end position. Hudson hauled in 39 receptions for 352 yards and 1a touchdown on the year. The Bengals also brought back veteran Drew Sample, who played a large role as a blocker and caught 22 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns of his own. All in all, the position was not a determent, but they certainly weren’t making a difference either. 2024 Outlook While I am of the belief that the tight end position is not essential to this offense and the need for a playmaking tight end can be at times overstated, clearly action must be taken address the position this offseason. Both Hudson and Sample could be hitting the open market. Free agency offers a plethora of other options, including fan-favorites Noah Fant and Gerald Everett, the latter of whom’s time with the Rams overlapped with Zac Taylor. Dalton Schultz and Mike Gesicki each have their own unique appeal but may carry a price tag that is a bit too high for a team looking to re-up Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase in the next few years. Austin Hooper and Hunter Henry could be options for the team as well, but both are pushing 30. Of course, the dream is to draft George’s Brock Bowers, but he will likely be long gone by the time the Bengals pick comes up. The next couple of guys I would consider are Ohio State’s Cade Stover and Florida State’s Jaheim Bell. Both could be difference-makers in this passing game.

Bengals 2023 Position Review: Special Teams

Kareem Elgazzar/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK Let’s kick it. I’ll say kick it, and you’ll just kick it with a tasty groove. From Evan McPherson to Charlie Jones, the Cincinnati Bengals have a lot of things to feel good about on special teams. They are young and they are talented, but there is one position that needs to be addressed. Key Players Evan McPherson Brad Robbins Cal Adomitis Charlie Jones Trayveon Williams 2023 Review They call him Money Mac, but for my money, Evan McPherson is Steady Evy. In 2023, McPherson was perfect on extra points and all field goal attempts under 50 yards. He also got a touchback on 76.8% of his kickoffs, up 20% from a year ago. You can count on him just like you can count on long snapper Cal Adomitis to get the ball where in the punter’s hands in a timely fashion. The punter, however, does not meet the same standard. Brad Robbins ranked 31st in yards per punt which in a league of 32 is (checks notes) not good. On the other end of things, rookie Charlie Jones showed that great potential as a punt returner, averaging 10.8 yards per return, including an 81-yard touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens. 2024 Outlook McPherson has added consistency to his tool belt, which already included a knack for long bombs and last-second game-winners. Darrin Simmons said he was looking for a returner who could bring the “fear of God” to opposing coaches and Jones has shown the potential to do just that. Then there is the situation at punter. Robbins will have a full off-season with the best special teams coach in the league who was, in his youth, a punter himself. Maybe he turns the corner, but the team cannot rely on that. Whether it be through the draft or free agency, I would expect someone to come in to compete. It might even be Drue Chrisman, who missed out on his chance due to a medical issue a year ago.
